Job Summary: Under the direction of the Backcountry and Nordic Programs Director, the Backcountry Guide will ensure a safe and enjoyable trip in the backcountry. Guide must be competent to lead a group into a complex backcountry setting. Strong communication skills, in-depth terrain knowledge, commitment to excellence and client services are essential to this position. Wilderness first aid and managing crisis situations may be necessary.

Essential Functions:

  • Guide ski groups safely in the backcountry using safe and appropriate backcountry travel protocols.
  • Teach basic “Intro to Backcountry” clinics and have a working familiarity with and knowledge of all rental equipment in the Backcountry program including tech bindings, a/t gear, and splitboarding equipment.
  • Maintain tour group cohesion and decorum while skiing or riding to optimize safety and facilitate quality of guest experience.
  • Assist the group members when and where necessary in order to provide a safe and enjoyable experience.
  • Up sell other Adventures, Services, and Retail Goods – especially reflecting those the client may be renting for touring and backcountry travel, i.e. a/t gear from Dynafit, splitboards from Weston or Burton, and Julbo eyewear and helmets.
  • Communicate via radio and in-person with other guides, Sports Center staff, and Ski Patrol.

  • Direct and continuous contact with guests.
  • Direct and continuous contact with co-workers, management and other departments.
  • Must have the ability to interact at any time with guests and other employees in a pleasant manner and maintain good working relationships with others and all departments.

Qualifications:

– High School Diploma or equivalent

– 2-4 years job-specific work experience with demonstrated competence.

Specific Requirements:

– Must be at least 18 years of age.

– Minimum WFA certification for deep backcountry tours

Technical:

  • Must be at an expert level and able to ski or ride in all conditions that may be present on the mountain and in the backcountry.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with and follow radio protocols.
  • 3+ years backcountry skiing or riding experience

Administrative:

– Proven ability to apply safe travels protocols during periods of high stress

– Proven ability to communicate and understand Backcountry related decisions

Work Schedule:

– Shifts vary, may be early morning or afternoon/evening, weekends, and/or holidays depending on business levels.

Mental:

– May experience unusual stress from high business volumes, deadlines, continual work with public, winter conditions, situational wilderness rescue scenarios, etc.

Physical:

– Must be able to lift 50 lbs.

– Must be able to stand for long periods of time.

– Must demonstrate ability to bend, kneel, handle, reach, grasp and perform repetitive motions. – Work is outdoors and requires constant exposure to cold and other extreme weather conditions.

Work Environment: The position involves regular exposure to open flames and hot items, and the use of potentially hazardous sharp cutting utensils. Most work is performed indoors, but some occasional outdoor work, such as snow shoveling, may be required. Outdoor work is performed in all weather conditions, including extreme cold, snow, wind and rain, on varied snow surfaces.

NOTE: All employees are required to perform alternate functions from time to time, both within and outside of their assigned department, particularly during peak periods such as holiday weekends.
