We are a national, non-profit literacy organization, founded in 1899. Our staff work with children, teens, adults and families who need help to improve their literacy skills. We work with a variety of community-based organizations to deliver volunteer-run, community-based programs, across Canada to those in greatest need.
In New Brunswick, the College runs Summer Literacy Camps in partnership with First Nation communities. We also run school year literacy initiatives and programming in collaboration with First Nation community partners in New Brunswick.

We are seeking a Camp Coordinator, who will provide program and administrative support for summer literacy camps and year round literacy programming in urban and rural settings for First Nations Programs throughout the Atlantic Provinces.
The Camp Coordinator will be a key member of the Atlantic regional team. The Camp Coordinator, will be responsible for relationship building; logistics; planning; staff hiring and training; project delivery; administration; evaluation and reporting for First Nations programs throughout Atlantic Canada. Some travel to urban and rural locations is required, and will be frequent (especially over the summer months).
 

Overall Accountability:
The Camp Coordinator, reports directly to the Regional Manager, Atlantic and will work closely with other regional staff on all aspects of First Nations literacy programming. The Camp Coordinator, works both independently, and collaboratively, to carry out and promote the work of the College for First Nations programs in the Atlantic Region.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Build strong relationships with First Nations communities across Atlantic Canada
  • Develop plans and curriculum for literacy programming for First Nations communities.
  • Coordinate all logistics related to urban programming; summer literacy camps and academic year programming for First Nations communities including travel; training; food; accommodation; materials and shipping, etc.
  • Coordinate and support staff recruitment and hiring process by scheduling and performing interviews, checking references and managing paperwork, etc.
  • Support program administration, evaluation and reporting by collecting, receiving, compiling and submitting results on a weekly basis.
  • Support and liaise with Literacy Camp counsellor teams throughout the duration of projects including community visits; weekly follow up calls; daily problem-solving; managing social media and reporting etc.
  • Provide general administrative support including phones, mail, supplies, filing systems, research, and other requests.

Skills and Attributes:

Essential:

  • Experience developing and delivering literacy programs for school-age children
  • Experience with travel to and/or working in rural and Indigenous communities
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, lively and constantly changing environment
  • Welcoming, confident and friendly manner, with excellent interpersonal and conflict management skills
  • Experience in delivering training material and fostering a vibrant, inclusive learning environment
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in both English and French
  • Highly committed and organized multi-tasker, with exceptional attention to detail
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel and Word
  • Willingness to work extended, or weekend hours on occasion, and available to travel at short notice
  • Driver’s license

Strongly Desired:

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multi-stakeholder projects
  • Experience in developing and delivering literacy programming for adults
  • Possess a passion for literacy and community capacity building
  • A sense of adventure and ability to both work independently and as member of a team
