Job Description

 

The Executive Director of Camping Services is expected to be the primary leader for YMCA Camp Jackson. Under the oversight of the YMCA of Pueblo President/CEO and Board of Directors (the Board), provides vision and direction for YMCA Camp Jackson, while also managing operations. Supervises and mentors all camp staff and represents the organization in the camping community. The Executive Director is also a humble leader who allows camp staff to be the “face” of camp for parents and children, while acting as spokesperson for YMCA Camp Jackson across the Y movement and around the country.

 

  • Works full time during the off-season supporting the YMCA of Pueblo, and camp hours while camp is in session.
  • Is in residence at camp for the entire program period. Live within easy access to camp year-round.
  • Responsible for the security and maintenance of all Camp grounds and facilities.
  • Responsible for the opening and closing of camp, working with the entire staff to efficiently and effectively manage this process.
  • Works effectively with the camp leadership staff to establish and achieve goals, fulfill the Camp vision, and maintain proper balance between the YMCA of Pueblo, the camp, the parents/alumni/donors, and facilities.
  • Hires and supervises the camp leadership staff.

 

Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in recreation, education or related field.
  • 5 years of YMCA experience preferred.
  • Experience in summer resident camp, retreat services or environmental education and 3 year experience in marketing, public relations or communications are preferred.
  • Experience in resident camp program operation and staff supervision as well as program development and implementation of program for participants of all ages.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, customer service and public relation skills, and the ability to work with youth and adults are essential.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Must understand the basic concepts of a voluntary, non-profit organization, as well as the structure of the YMCA as a partnership of volunteers and staff, and accept a commitment to the YMCA mission.
  • This position must have the ability to respond to safety and emergency situations.
  • CDL license preferred.Colorado State license will be required as well as capacity to drive to various locations within Colorado.
  • Lifeguard, Wilderness First Responder, high ropes, nurse practioner certification preferred.

 

Essential Functions

 

  • Models and communicates the YMCA of Pueblo’s mission, vision and values.
  • Daily support for camp.
  • Working closely with the President/CEO and Board, develop a strategic and capital projects plan for YMCA Camp Jackson, as well as operating goals that stem from those priorities.
  • Provide timely reports to the President/CEO and Board as requested.
  • In close collaboration with the camp leadership staff, oversee the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs and services that support the mission of the organization.
  • Develop a staffing structure that supports the efficient delivery of programs and services, including hiring, managing, and mentoring the staff.
  • Implement and continually revise personnel policies and manage the staff performance review process.
  • Oversee camp leadership staff and participate in the process of recruiting and enrolling campers in all camp sessions.
  • Lead fundraising efforts, including supporting the Board’s involvement in fundraising, personally cultivating and soliciting donors, and developing sustainable fund raising plans and processes for the organization.
  • Develop a realistic annual budget, and provide regular, timely internal financial statements to the President/CEO and Board that compare performance to budget and to the previous year or other relevant benchmarks. Plan for adequate cash flow to cover operational needs and promote fiscal responsibility throughout the organization.
  • Conduct multiyear financial analysis, reviewing trends, and engaging the Board in discussions about financial stability and sustainability, fiscal responsibility, including the development of adequate operating reserves.
  • Ensure compliance with all local, state and federal legal requirements.
  • Build positive relationships with partner organizations, the local community, and the broader YMCA camping community.
  • Ensure that all camp programs are run safely and are current and enriching for all campers, staff, and families, and that there is cohesion to all of the Camp’s offerings.
  • Design and direct the operations of all Camp marketing activities, including new media outlets and technological and database platforms.
  • Maintain a proper joy/challenge balance for fun-filled summers of significant growth for the campers.
