Job Description

We are seeking to appoint a course assistant in the Warwickshire area on a self-employed basis. The successful applicant will have aspirations to become a foraging instructor in the near future.

Our new assistant will have strong plant and fungi identification skills, enthusiasm for learning more, excellent interpersonal skills, be a good presenter of information, enjoy sharing knowledge with groups of people, understand the importance of conservation and sustainability, and have proven experience of public speaking.

The role will include helping with course recces, assisting with showing participants how to identify plants and mushrooms, carrying equipment, helping in ensure Covid-secure and health and safety measures are adhered to, and keeping up-to-date with the latest scientific information regarding plants, fungi and the environment. This is not an exhaustive list.

In addition, the successful candidate should be happy working alone or as part of a team, be prepared to educate themselves in health and safety legislation and risk assessment preparation, and either have qualifications in, or be prepared to work towards qualifications in, first aid, food hygiene and outdoor learning.

As the role progresses, there will be the requirement for the successful applicant to be able to prepare samples of wild food recipes for consumption by foraging course participants. This can include hot, cold and preserved foods.

The role is outdoor based so candidates must be happy to work in all weathers and across varying terrains. Due to the nature of the courses, candidates will need to have their own transport, and, on foraging courses, the facility to bring with them bags weighing several kilos during sessions lasting 3.5 hours or longer.

The person we are seeking will be dedicated, reliable and prepared to put in the effort to becoming an instructor. They will be eager to learn and progress, and for the right candidate a busy calendar of courses awaits. Courses are run predominantly on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays - these are core working days.

Successful candidates will be expected to work on wild food and related courses exclusively under contract for the company.

A proven track record of CPD and a willingness to continue with CPD will be a distinct advantage.

Remuneration will be discussed with candidates who are invited for interview. Initially this will be held via telephone or video call.
