Inclusive Program Developer

A registered charity, we maintain and manages Keppoch Mountain, a former ski hill. Situated 15 km from the university town of Antigonish, NS, Keppoch is a world-class, multi-use, recreation facility offering a multitude of outdoor activities and educational opportunities, including mountain biking, hiking, Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, and swimming. Serving residents of Antigonish Town and County, as well as visitors from other parts of Nova Scotia, Atlantic Canada, and further afield. We encourage and facilitates outdoor activities for people of all ages and abilities while conserving access to natural wilderness areas.

We plan to enhance and expand the use of the Keppoch facility by introducing programs aimed at attracting diverse user groups, including children, youth, and families, adults, and people at risk.

The Inclusive Program Developer will be responsible for working with the Program Committee and Operations Manager to develop and implement programming at Keppoch.

Examples of Potential Inclusive Programs:

  • Mountain bike club for children and youth.
  • Keppoch Kids Wilderness and Ecology Club.
  • Older adult hiking/snowshoeing club.
  • Partnerships with local organizations, such as, those running outdoor youth programming, focused on cultural or arts programming, or programming for adults and families.

The main areas of focus:

1. Programs: Responsible for the development of programs for local and regional children, youth and adults. Program development will include: (1) collaborating with Keppoch members, and community members to determine the kinds of programming desired; (2) designing programs to meet those requirements; (3) creating a budget; generating funding for programs; (4) hiring staff; (5) assisting in or directly managing programs while they are running, (6) assessing outcomes and impacts of Keppoch programs. This work will be done in conjunction with the and Operations Manager and the Programs Committee.

2. Administration: Assist with those regular administrative operations of the facility that support programs by providing customer service to members on-site or through digital communication.

3. Marketing and promotion: Develop or oversee the marketing and promotion of programs. This will involve creating marketing and promotion materials and then ensuring they are distributed at the Keppoch, throughout the community and online.

4. Equity, diversity, and inclusion: Maintain an “equity-focus” when developing and running all programs. This means planning programs to include people from various groups in Antigonish Town and County. Actively work to expand the userbase of the Keppoch by using an equity, inclusion and diversity “lens”, that is, ensuring the inclusion of people of various genders, races, ethnicities, abilities, ages, sexual orientations etc.

Employment Duration:

  • Ten month part-time position (a minimum of 20 hours per week, October 5, 2020 - July 31, 2021)
  • Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience Reports directly to the General Manager of the Keppoch and meets regularly with the  Programs Committee.

Basic Requirements:

  • Post-secondary degree (college or university degree) in outdoor recreation/education or equivalent in outdoor education experience required.
  • Must have own transportation.
  • Must be able to provide clean Child Abuse Registry, Vulnerable Sector, and Criminal Background Checks.
  • Must be physically capable of working outside, in various weather conditions throughout the year.
  • Demonstrates abilities in leadership, safety and risk management, program management, good judgment, team building, communications and customer service, and problem solving.
  • Have knowledge of and experience working within an equity, inclusion and diversity framework and experience working with and for people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of programming and ability to coordinate and run programs.

Certification Requirements:

  • Must have or being willing to complete First Aid and CPR level C or Equivalent
  • High Five Principles of Healthy Child Development OR Equivalent degree or experience
  • WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information Systems) Applications
