Our camp staff supervise, and guide girls aged 1st-12th grade as they participate in a wide variety of camp programming including swimming, boating, archery, hiking, tent camping, arts and crafts, cookouts, campfires, team-building, and more!

This position typically works Sunday through Friday throughout the summer with a minimum of 24 hours off each week.

POSITION SUMMARY

Lead Tripping Counselors will supervise a patrol (small, similarly aged group) of girls enrolled in a day or overnight tripping program. This position reports to the Assistant Director of Program and facilitates off-site day and overnight experiences to help girls Discover themselves, Connect with others and Take Action to make the world a better place. The Lead Tripping Counselor will instill the importance of healthy and safe living and the enjoyment and appreciation of the outdoors to the girls while providing an environment that welcomes diversity, fosters respect, and encourages friendships. The Lead Tripping Counselor will also gather equipment, plan routes, create a trip binder for each session, train girls and staff in skills necessary for each trip, lead and supervise off-site trips, direct and supervise the secondary tripping counselor, and manage emergency communications during trips. Lead Counselors will supervise a general counselor in the same patrol providing guidance, support, and advice as necessary.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • At least 21 years old required with a High School Diploma required (advanced education or college preferred).
  • Position necessitates that applicants have the ability to drive, possess a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record, maintain personal auto insurance/meet the council insurance company’s requirement for coverage, and submit to drug test, background check and motor vehicle record check.
  • Ability to drive a 12-passenger van required (experience preferred).
  • Wilderness First Aid and CPR certifications required (can be provided during staff training).
  • Lifeguard certification required (can be provided during staff training).
  • Ability to supervise campers and other staff and delegate job responsibilities in a high-stress, fast-paced environment.
  • Experience working in diverse communities preferred.
  • Experience in applying key competencies to include strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to make independent decisions; interact effectively with staff and volunteers; and work well with children.

. Requirements:

  • Serve as the lead counselor within a tripping patrol and supervise a general counselor. During rare weeks without tripping programs the incumbent may supervise a general camp program, assist with camp planning, or work as a general counselor.
  • Act as a camp activity leader in a variety of program areas as needed (for example; weird science, drama, sports, archery, arts & crafts, outdoor cooking, etc.).
  • Ensure that program objectives are met for each session.
  • Lead day and overnight adventure trips potentially including, but not limited to, whitewater rafting, stand-up paddle boarding, high ropes/challenge adventure, rock climbing, zip-lining, kayaking, swimming, backpacking, hiking, outdoor cooking, and more. (Professional guides will be provided in most program areas; thus, experience not always required.)
  • In conjunction with the Assistant Director of Program, develop tripping plans for each trip including itineraries, contact information, emergency information.
  • Maintain tripping equipment used for programming including cleaning, proper storage, damage reports, etc.
  • Serve as the lead medical provider for girls during off-site trips including medication administration.
  • Learn and implement the crisis management plan, including emergency procedures. Serve as the off-site initial emergency manager.
  • Assist in calling meals at the dining hall, leading all-camp activities, and other general camp counselor duties as assigned by the Assistant Director of Program, or other administrative staff.
  • While on camp incumbent will sleep in a girl unit (sometimes in a separate counselor cabin, and sometimes in an attached but separate room) and is expected to help with nighttime supervision and morning routines. During off site trips sleeping accommodations may include tents, cabins, hammocks, etc.

ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Activities occur both inside and outside with employee subject to environmental conditions to include fluctuating weather conditions (hot, cold, wind, rain, etc.) and exposure to variety of vegetation and animals.
  • Ability to stoop, kneel, bend, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, work with fingers, grasp, feel, talk, hear, and perform repetitive motions.
  • Ability to perform light work exerting up to 40 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
  • Ability to sleep in a tent on the ground and to carry a backpack of up to 40 pounds for up to four days at a time.
  • Ability to sit for long stretches while driving a 12-passenger van.

COMPENSATION/BENEFITS

Summer seasonal employment is a unique experience and falls under the seasonal exemption standard categorized as “seasonal amusement or recreational establishment” by the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), the Department of Labor (DOL). This exempts the position from federal minimum and overtime wage requirements as we compensate a daily rate with lodging and meals provided in addition to seasonal earnings during scheduled workdays. The potential seasonal earnings for this position may be up to $3,080 depending on schedule, availability, experience, and related certifications. This is a seasonal position only with no eligibility for benefits.
