We have a Lead Instructor position available for 2021

We are charity that runs outdoor education programmes for people with intellectual disabilities, full time, year round.

We are looking for a lead instructor to start in Jan 2020 on a full time, permanent contract. This contract will include 2-3 months of training/handover with our current lead instructor.

We are looking for someone who is: flexible, adaptable, patient and friendly that will fit in with our small team and be a committed member of our organisation long term.

Ideally candidates will have:

  • Outdoor recreation qualification
  • NZOIA level 1 (rock and bush) preferred, leader awards may be acceptable for the right person
  • Experience supervising staff and risk management 
  • Experience in planning programmes
  • Skills and experience instructing in a variety of pursuits (rock, bush, water, abseiling, ABL etc) with knowledge of Christchurch and Canterbury outdoor activity locations
  • Experience or demonstrate knowledge of working with students with Intellectual Disabilities
  • Full NZ drivers licence – manual
  • First Aid Certificate (PHEC or wilderness preferred)
  • Be flexible, adaptable, patient and friendly

This position will include:

  • Running programmes as the lead instructor and being in charge of the overall risk management, activity/student safety and programme activities
  • Assisting in the planning, organising and running of outdoor programmes
  • Overseeing (and co-instructing with) staff and volunteers including safety management and role delegation 
  • Keeping in regular contact with the Managing Director who will provide ongoing training and support to help you to develop your skills
  • We offer a variety of activities and pursuits (water, bush, rope, hike, bike etc), with the opportunities for our instructors to plan sessions/programmes around their interests and skills.
