Job Description

We are a not for profit charity based at Long Bay, Auckland. We offer marine-based environmental education and outdoor recreational experiences primarily for young New Zealanders.
 
The Opportunities 
We are looking to grow our existing pool of outdoor sailing leaders. Therefore, we are looking for vibrant and dynamic individuals with sailing qualifications to join our wider team of outdoor leaders.  You will identify with our mission statement of providing life-changing marine environmental education and outdoor experiences and this will be evident in how you work. As these are casual opportunities, hours of work are rostered and may include some weekends.  

You will be part of an enthusiastic team, delivering quality outdoor experiences to a variety of schools, corporate groups, and other not-for-profit organisations. In this role, you will support them in fostering our mission statement through the means of:

  • Delivering various land and water-based outdoor activities (with a focus on sailing);
  • Providing guidance on marine education to raise awareness of environmental sustainability and protection;
  • Helping to keep our facility clean and tidy;
  • Maintaining and checking gear 
     

You

The ideal candidates will have completed industry relevant qualifications in sailing and have experience leading groups in this context.  Working experience in similar organisations or with similar craft to what we use MAC 370) is desirable. You will have a genuine interest in continuing to grow and evolve in the outdoor recreation space. You will be good at listening and can take guidance from other colleagues over daily tasks.

In addition to this, you will be able to work independently in a controlled setting consistently collecting information about the environment you are working in and be able to use this to make rational and sensible decisions. The ideal candidates will strive to bring life to the vision and mission and will be willing to get stuck in! 

You will be knowledgeable of Te Ao Maori, Principles of the Treaty of Waitangi and how they can be applied to a working context or at a minimum have an awareness of them and openness to learn.
 

Requirements

  • Industry recognised qualifications and proficiency in sailing;
  • Working towards or completed a Maritime VHF Operator course;
  • First Aid qualified
  • Passionate about the marine environment and the outdoors;
  • Ethical standards in-line with our values and mission;
  • Legally able to work in New Zealand;
  • Clean police check

 
Advantageous (Desirable)

  • Previous experience leading different groups in sailing trips
  • Experience operating MAC 370 craft
  • Previous experience working with young children
  • Knowledge of the outdoors including the marine environment
