An exciting and rewarding opportunity to work in conservation engagement in the wild and remote Kimberley region of Western Australia. This role requires excellent communication and relevant ecological experience in Australia. If you are looking to join the Australian Wildlife Conservancy (AWC) team and help us deliver our mission of the effective conservation of all Australian animal species and the habitats in which they live, then read on.

AWC is the largest private (non-profit) owner/manager of land for conservation in Australia. AWC now owns, manages or works in partnership across 30 locations, spanning more than 6.5 million hectares, in some of the most important areas for biodiversity in Australia. Over 4.5 million hectares of this are sanctuaries and partnership areas in the Kimberley. We are seeking an exceptional, highly motivated, engaging and professional Senior Kimberley Interpretations Guide to join our ecology guiding team at Mornington and Charnley River Wildlife Sanctuaries in the delivery of outstanding visitor experiences. This role involves coordinating and delivering guided visitor programs which effectively communicate AWC's conservation achievements and the ecology of Kimberley ecosystems.

Reporting to the Events Project Manager and Kimberley Wilderness Camp Manager, you will work as part of, and manage, a team of guides communicating AWC's conservation science and land management programs to public visitors and AWC supporters.

To succeed in this role, you will require:

  • A passion for the conservation of Australia's wildlife and habitats.
  • Experience in leading and managing teams, including the ability to inspire and engage with your team to deliver exceptional public visitation and event outcomes.
  • A proven ability to undertake detailed logistics and planning with the capacity to prioritise and execute multiple tasks in an efficient manner.
  • The confidence to lead and deliver an exceptional and thoughtful visitor experience (e.g. including bird watching and kayaking tours)
  • Outstanding communication skills - the ability to clearly convey AWC's mission and inspire support for that mission amongst a wide variety of stakeholders.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills including a demonstrated ability to: 
    • Work effectively as part of a small team or, as required, independently;
    • Engage with high net worth individuals and the general public;
    • Support other staff in the delivery of events.
    • A highly engaging, friendly, intelligent and confident personality.
  • A strong work ethic including a willingness to work long hours and weekends as required.
  • An ability to work under pressure and a willingness to adapt.
  • A good level of fitness, including competent swimming ability. The role involves physical activities including lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling loads, bending, climbing.
  • Confidence driving a variety of vehicles.

 Working Environment: 

  • Flexibility in work hours is required to meet operational requirements of the role.
  • Basic accommodation on AWC sanctuaries is provided (predominantly on-site at Mornington and Charnley River Wildlife Sanctuaries).
  • Regular travel between AWC's Charnley and Mornington Wildlife Sanctuaries.
  • A willingness to work and live in a remote location.
  • The ability to work and live in extreme weather conditions (hot, humid, dry, wet).

Licenses and Certificates: 

  • A degree in ecology (or equivalent) is essential. Honours is desirable.
  • Experience in tourism, tour-guiding or public speaking (to a wide range of people) is essential.
  • A current valid Australian (or recognized international license) manual driver's license, with experience in 4WD/off-road conditions is essential. A light rigid license is also required; training/licensing will be provided to successful candidates.
  • Current first aid certificate (essential), senior and/or remote first aid (desirable).
  • WA or nationally accredited current RSA (Responsible Service of Alcohol) certificate (desirable).
  • National police clearance certificate

This role is a 6 month contract. The remuneration offer includes, in addition to salary, basic accommodation.
