We are hiring for a part-time instructor who can teach our Log Book’s seamanship course this fall and winter (immediately). This is a virtual class offered from 7:30 – 9:00 pm Wednesday evenings. There is always more to do and depending on your skills there are possibilities for fulltime employment.

Background

We are a well-established and unique tall ship sailing organization in Canada that operates a variety of year-round programs for youth and adults. As a registered non-profit, we provide youth with the opportunity to reach new heights through adventure and character-building experiences sailing the brigantines Fair Jeanne and Black Jack in the Ottawa River, St. Lawrence Seaway, Great Lakes, and occasionally in Atlantic Canada.

Guided by a dedicated and respected volunteer board of directors, and supported by a vibrant volunteer auxiliary, we offer programs specifically designed for individuals, community groups, schools, period sailing and corporate training.

Position(s)

We are inviting applications for the position of Seamanship Instructor to join our growing team.

General Responsibilities

This part-time role reports to the Head of School and is responsible for teaching the skills as outlined in the Sail Training Log Book. This position will work with other faculty members and volunteers to coordinate the monthly in-person lessons to maximize learning opportunities.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Teaching 2-hours per week a virtual class and approx. one weekend a month in-person session. This course is based on our Log Book and focused on helping youth 12-18 progress through their Transport- Canada based levels;
  • Lesson planning and development;
  • Being able to instruct, demonstrate and lead by example Bytown's sail training curriculum, for the benefit of all trainees;
  • Able to use Zoom and PowerPoint (or other presentation tools) to deliver the virtual class;
  • Working with, cooperating and encouraging participation in program activities, operations, shipyards, etc.;
  • As host/ambassador for the foundation/program, you are respectful, personable, and above reproach when carrying out the above duties; and
  • Ability to work independently and resourcefully.

Qualifications

  • Sail training experience and/or sail endorsement – ideally on Tall Ships
  • Some familiarization with TP 33313E (Transport Canada Standard Relating to Design, Construction and Operational Safety of Sail Training Vessels), or willingness to learn
  • Previous teaching experience desirable as interests in working with youth in a leadership capacity
  • Comfortable working with Zoom or other similar tools
  • Willing to complete a Police Records Check for work with the vulnerable sector.
