About the Whale & Dolphin Safari

We provide 4.5-hour Safari’s 7 days a week, plus the vessel is available for charter for functions and events. Operating around our mission statement and vision, ‘discover today – protect for tomorrow’, our goal is to inform and educate our passengers about the fragile balance between human existence and our direct impact on the marine environment.

About the role

This is a fantastic opportunity for a few talented individuals who are passionate about the marine environment. Working as a 1st Mate or crew/guide on our 19m catamaran in the Hauraki Gulf your responsibilities will include:

  • Ensuring passenger and crew safety
  • Deckhand duties such as line handling, emergency procedure training, vessel/engine checks
  • Providing informative and enthusiastic commentary & presentations to passengers on multiple aspects of marine life and science
  • Serving passengers from our onboard café/bar
  • Supporting research conducted during Safari’s by recording data

Operations are 7 days a week, so weekend work is required, as is evening work for charters, and availability over the busy Christmas & New Year period. Full-time or Part-Time on a fixed-term basis and casual employment options can be discussed. 

About you

Safety is a priority so applicants must be able to demonstrate a safety-conscious attitude. Personality plays a big part in providing outstanding experiences on our vessel and we are looking for outgoing, friendly and welcoming individuals with a passion for marine life and sharing knowledge. 

Requirements:

  • Qualified Deckhand Qualification (minimum for 1st Mate roles, desirable for crew roles)
  • Maritime experience in a similar role (minimum for 1st Mate roles, desirable for crew roles)
  • Public speaking and hosting skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively and supportively within a team
  • Positive attitude
  • Excellent knowledge on marine life, marine mammals and the environment

Bonus:

  • Degree in Marine biology or similar
  • LCQ/Bar Duty Manager

All employees are subject to a Drug and Alcohol Policy which involves a pre-employment drug test and has random drug and alcohol testing as part of it.
