Duration: ASAP - September 6 to 30th, 2021 (Seasonal Contract, flexible end date)
Hours: Full-Time, Wednesday - Sunday, 9:15am-4:30pm (35 hours per week)
Wage: $15.20-25.00/ hr commensurate with experience

We have been operating at the Jericho Sailing Centre located in scenic Vancouver, BC, Canada since 1977. For over 40 years we have been teaching windsurfing, stand up paddling and skimboarding to individuals and groups. With our specialized equipment, friendly, experienced and professional staff, we offer the safest and most enjoyable way to get on the water and learn new skills. We have programs for large and small groups, schools, community centers, businesses and individuals, designed to give you a taste, or become proficient. Position Summary:
We are looking for a windsurfing instructor to join our energetic and outdoor-loving team! This position will teach our introductory Discover Windsurfing I & II programs, running Wednesday-Sunday weekly. While these classes are geared towards adults, youth do enroll from time-to-time. If no classes are scheduled, time will be spent maintaining and repairing equipment. There is also an opportunity to run or help run workshops on various intermediate/ advanced topics (harness, footstraps, shortboard, foiling, tricks) as well as teach private lessons. As such, the candidate’s skills must be commensurate with these topics. We are very open to accepting out of country explorers to our team.


Some examples of the daily tasks of a Windsurfing Instructor would include:

  • Prepare class lesson plan (could be a group lesson, private, or semi-private).
  • Prepare equipment needed for the lesson equipment taking into account student ability, age, weight and height.
  • Facilitate instructor and student introductions
  • Introduce basic wind geometry.
  • Demonstrate concepts interactively by using dryland simulator (basic mechanics of propulsion/direction & steering).
  • Oversee wetsuit and life jacket fittings with help of beach hut attendants.
  • Lead selection, retrieval and assembly of equipment (board and sail).
  • Revise safety components of the lesson including: self rescue demo, boundaries and other hazards such as tide, current, and weather predictions.
  • Debrief students on points of learning, including areas to concentrate on for future development.

Requirements

-Know how to create memorable customer experience
-Are seeking a role to grow your leadership skills
What we need:
-Knowledge and appreciation of windsurfing, including equipment maintenance, repair and rigging
-Windsurfing group teaching experience
-Communication skills
-Teamwork skills
-Pleasure Craft Operating Card (PCOC) or willingness to get it
-Valid First Aid Training
-Valid Criminal Record Check or willingness to get one
