We are an independent, non-denominational, co-educational school which is committed to providing an outstanding holistic education for young people from Pre-K through Grade 12. We are now inviting applications for a Director of Outdoor Education to start as soon as possible.

Outdoor Education (OE) is a well established and important part of our holistic education programme. The Director of Outdoor Education is expected to further develop and execute a vision for an extensive and world class PreK-12 Outdoor Education programme which excites and engages students in outdoor pursuits while actively contributing to their social and emotional development and furthering their understanding of sustainability and indigenous values. Working with a team of Outdoor Education teachers, the Director will coordinate and lead a range of developmentally appropriate learning experiences, oversee a range of co-curricular activities, including the Duke of Edinburgh programme, and lead appropriate training for staff and students. The successful applicant will be a knowledgeable, experienced and enthusiastic outdoor educator with a range of training and/or certifications in recognized outdoor pursuits.

Required Qualifications

  • Must be a Canadian resident and/or legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Professional training and/or certification in the some of the following areas: Bronze Cross, NLS,
  • Nordic skiing, Avalanche safety, Sea Kayaking, Search and Rescue, Backpacking, Canoeing, Climbing, etc which are regularly maintained.
  • Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree, or the equivalent
  • Demonstrated excellence in interacting with students of a variety of ages
  • Class 4 Driver’s license, or ability to obtain by August 2020
  • Current Wilderness First Aid Certification
  • Clear vision of the role that outdoor education plays in the personal development of young people
  • A high level of physical fitness and passion for the outdoors
  • Commitment to the highest standards of professional conduct in relation to risk management and adherence to outdoor industry best practices

Preferred Experience and Qualities:

  • A teaching qualification that qualifies the person appointed to teach in BC
  • Knowledge of one or more IB programmes (DP, MYP, or PYP)
  • Previous experience in an Outdoor Education leadership role
  • At least five years’ successful experience as an Outdoor Education teacher in a school setting
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team
  • Strong organisational, communication, administrative and interpersonal skills
  • Familiarity with Google Apps for Education
