EXPEDITION CREW

We are a 35-year old Australian pioneering expedition cruise company.  We operate and manage a fleet of three Australian flagged small expedition ships to the highest standards of safety and hospitality.  Our unique itineraries take guests to some of the most beautiful, yet undiscovered, regions Australia, Asia-Pacific, South Pacific and Indian Ocean islands, delivering diverse shore excursions and expert-led programs.

Our crew are carefully selected for their engaging personalities, attention to detail and commitment to delivering the highest standards of service so our guests always receive a warm welcome aboard. 

We are engaging in expressions of interest for Expedition Crew, a well presented, bright attitude, team orientated individual to join our on board Expedition Team!

EXPEDITION CREW

The role of the Expedition Crew is to facilitate the enjoyment and education of all guests both onboard and in the field, whilst also ensuring the safety of guests, crew and excursion craft as the highest priority. This is achieved in conjunction with the Expedition Leader, Assistant Expedition Leader and Guest Lecturers through interpretive presentations, commentary, and in safety briefs.

This also includes assisting with planning and managing of daily activities and expeditions to maximise each activity within the limits of weather conditions and passenger constraints.

When on excursions away from the ship, the Expedition Crew shall assume responsibility for their part of the excursion, for instance it may be water activities. This involves directing other crew members and lecturers; providing accurate and comprehensive logistical and safety information; and quality interpretation to the guests including meet-back times and safety considerations. Active timekeeping for the whole activity will be required with due regard for the next destination and the requirements of the ship.

  • At all times, ensuring that quality guest experience ashore and on board is delivered
  • Take personal responsibility to gain basic knowledge about regions where individual roster indicates travel, including flora/fauna, history and local culture and customs
  • Prepare a suite of presentations relevant to the region of travel
  • Guiding and actively managing the guest’s Health and Safety
  • Prepare equipment required and Xplorer vessels and tenders
  • Ensure all emergency and safety equipment required for the excursion is pre checked and assigned to assisting crew as required
  • Assist in the process of loading / disembarking the Xplorers and other ship tenders. Conduct pre-excursion risk assessments
  • Assist, manage and control of excursions and activities
  • Understand and comply with regulatory restrictions and conditions for each site visited
  • Provide accurate and comprehensive logistical and safety information to the guests and crew on each excursion. Keeping a constant vigil for the safety of all
  • Provide high quality interpretation covering flora/fauna, history and local culture and customs during tender and shore excursions
  • Prepare the arrangement of the Lecture Lounge in presentation format and equipment in advance of presentations.  Re-arrange lounge layout back to lounge setting, shut down equipment when presentation is finished and remove any crockery, glassware and rubbish left behind
  • Actively promote passenger interaction
  • Ensure proper conduct is exercised by guests and crew with regards to indigenous / historical sites, beach collecting and wildlife in keeping with eco-tourism accreditation, operational permits and concessions
  • Responsible for water activities; in particular snorkeling and diving events
  • Check and maintain dive gear and snorkel equipment, attending to any fault or problem quickly
  • In conjunction with Expedition Leader, review daily operations, updating notes and site reports, risk evaluation update, equipment / support requirement and other health and safety issues
  • Work as part of the crew assisting with vessel turnaround including gangway watch duties
  • Required to work as part of a high-performing team in the provision of the overall cruise experience
  • Required to maintain the highest standards of behaviour, discipline and dress appropriate to company policy and image at all times
  • Follow all reasonable directions given by Manager or delegate

What you will bring to us

  • Demonstrated experience with fauna, flora, culture, customs and history including maritime history preferred
  • At least 5 years’ experience in the tourism industry, preferably in a tour guiding role – a qualification in tourism is highly regarded
  • Securing the confidence and respect of guests
  • Strong boat handling knowledge and experience preferred
  • Previous experience working in remote locations
  • Intermediate Microsoft Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication
  • Confident public speaker
  • Guiding
  • Excellent customer service: professional demeanour, ability to use necessary levels of tact and courtesy
  • Ability to troubleshoot, act quickly with confident and make sound decisions while exercising good judgement
  • Open Water Dive Certificate highly regarded
  • PADI Dive Instructor or Dive Master qualification highly regarded
  • Ability to work well under pressure
  • Familiar with basic photography
  • Ability to provide interpretational presentations confidently
  • Can speak and/or understand other languages highly regarded

Qualifications required

  • Degree in Natural Sciences or other (highly regarded)
  • First Aid and CPR
  • AMSA Medical
  • CoST (AMSA endorsed)
  • Crowd Control and Crisis Management
  • Passport
  • ASSB
  • MSIC

Must be able to obtain if not already hold

  • Drivers Licence (manual highly regarded)
  • Vaccination Record – Yellow Fever
  • Remote First Aid & Advanced CPR
  • Coxswains Certificate – Grade 1 (AMSA endorsed)
