ROLE OVERVIEW

The Research team focuses on coastal ecology research and monitoring in British Columbia. The program includes a long-term ecological monitoring program and research related key species and habitats in Howe Sound, including groundfish, crustaceans, glass sponges, echinoderms, kelp and others, and involves managing a wide variety of data types and sources. Most current projects involve underwater research through the use of SCUBA.

Reporting to the Manager, the Field Research & Data Assistant is primarily on call as a scientific diver with the team. The role will also undertake to learn the software and data curation as currently used by the team. Duties will include underwater data collection, boating, equipment maintenance, data entry, and assisting with data management and report preparation. Fieldwork for this position may also include surveys of other habitat types, such as shoreline habitats, sea surface, or deep water using non-diving protocols and equipment.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Actively participating in and reporting findings of conservation-oriented coastal ecology field research projects by:

  • Assisting with the conduct of field-based research projects;
  • Collecting data and specimens in the field using SCUBA-based survey protocols or other field research techniques;
  • Entering and uploading research project data and files;
  • Assisting with data summary, basic analysis, and report writing.

Assists in the development of a data management plan and/or software by:

  • Assisting with the development of a long-term data management plan;
  • Assisting with the selection or development of appropriate data management software;
  • Updating existing data management software.

Assists with the maintenance of Howe Sound Research and Conservation’s boat and field equipment by:

  • Cleaning, calibrating and maintaining field equipment;
  • Cleaning and maintaining underwater photo, video and lighting equipment;
  • Cleaning and maintaining diving equipment;
  • Assisting with boat maintenance, light repairs and cleaning.

Consistently improves processes by:

  • Promptly aiding in Emergency protocol;
  • Maintaining organizational safety standards;
  • Continually improving our impact on the environment and greening of operations through support of EMS protocols;
  • Actively demonstrating the values and expectations for conduct;
  • Performing additional duties of a similar nature or level as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

  • BSc in Biology, Marine Science or a related field;
  • PADI or NAUI open water dive certification with 25+ cold water drysuit diving experience;
  • Valid BC Driver’s license required;
  • Software programming or data management experience;
  • Boating experience with MED A3 and SVOP qualification a strong asset;
  • Occupational First Aid Level 1 an asset;
  • Underwater photo and video experience an asset.

Technical Competencies

  • Knowledge of marine ecology and experience with taxonomic identification of local marine life;
  • Boat operation and maintenance experience;
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently;
  • Capable of conducting survey routines and entering spreadsheet data with a high level of attention to detail;
  • Data management skills;
  • Knowledge of one or more software programming languages;
  • Excellent written and verbal skills;
  • GIS skills an asset;
  • Job requires physical strength and caution under hazardous field conditions in extreme weather that may arise.

Working Conditions:

  • The incumbent will work in a shared office environment with the usual ergonomic risks (remote working at-home currently due to COVID in place of a shared office);
  • The job includes the risk of exposure to heat or cold stress while performing boat-based fieldwork as well as exposure to slippery conditions and uneven, non-stable surfaces.
  • The incumbent must be able to safely lift up to 75lbs;
  • Frequently works at field locations offsite;
  • Occasionally travels to attend off-site meetings and presentations;
  • Flexibility and availability in the schedule are required during the week, including working the occasional weekends and evenings.
  • The incumbent is required to obtain and submit to the Vancouver Aquarium Diving Safety Officer (DSO) a certificate of medical fitness for occupational diving acceptable to WorkSafeBC prior to the commencement of employment.
