What we want

Outdoor Adventures runs several trips every semester offered to the student and general public population. The Trip Leader is responsible for conducting all phases of the outdoor recreation activity including pre-trip, trip, and post-trip duties. What you need to know

This is a part-time position.

 

COVID-19 information: The university monitors and updates our recruiting, hiring and onboarding processes to align with local, state and federally mandated health guidelines to keep employees, prospective employees, and visitors as safe as possible. Each department has established both remote and in-person procedures for conducting these processes, which include sanitizing common spaces, a mask policy, and maintaining safe physical distancing to the extent possible. Departments will provide the procedures to be followed at each step of the recruiting process.

 

Required Education and Experience:

  • High School diploma or a combination of education and experience
  • Experience leading and instructing groups of 4-16 people

 

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Proficiency speaking and writing fluently in professional English
  • Proficiency with computer programs
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word, web browsers, point of sale, and inventory management and reservations.
  • Utilize written and verbal directions to complete tasks independently
  • Demonstrated ability to work with little to no supervision and with only basic guidance in preparation
  • Demonstrated ability to design and implement a plan for a lesson or activity, including preparation and follow-up
  • Demonstrated ability in the activity scheduled, including but not limited to hiking, backpacking, rock climbing, lead-climbing, stand-up paddle boarding, canoeing, river kayaking, kayak rolls, and bike maintenance
  • Ability to multi task and work cooperatively with others

 

Required Licenses and Certifications:

  • Current certifications in Wilderness First Aid (16 hour minimum) and CPR/AED

 

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or in pursuit of bachelor’s degree

 

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work with a diverse public
  • Effective organizational ability
  • Provide clear and productive feedback to peers and other staff

 

Preferred Licenses and Certifications:

  • Current certification in Wilderness First Responder ACA Canoe/Kayak for water staff
  • River Rescue for water certification
  • PCIA or AMGA Climbing for rock staff

 

Responsibilities:

  • Instruction - Provides sequential, progressive and effective skill instruction. Ensures that every participant has the opportunity throughout the activity to become more proficient at all program elements. Models the behaviors expected of the group. Ensures that the rationale behind all guidelines, expectations, and decisions are understood by the group. Mentors and trains assistant trip leader and trip interns.
  • Group Management - Responsible for the safety and well-being of the group. Makes judgments commensurate with your ability and skill. Supervises according to the ability of the group. Facilitates quality customer service through safe and positive interactions with trip participants, park staff and co-leaders. Initiates and facilitates group participation.
  • Risk Management - Ensures that the rationale behind all guidelines, expectations, and decisions are understood by the group. Gathers and prepares required documents for risk management and program effectiveness.
  • Promotion - Promotes the trip and recruits participants, utilizing all appropriate avenues, in conjunction with other OA Staff.
  • Meetings - Attends appropriate staff workshops and staff meetings. Completes job-related training required by Texas A&M University System and the Department of Recreational Sports.
  • Other - Performs other duties as assigned.
