Job Description

We are looking for an outdoor education supervisor to work one or more of the following contracts:

1. Spring Break Day & Overnight Camps – March 13th to 27th 2021

 

2. Summer Day & Overnight Camps – June 13th – Late Aug 2021

 

3. Year-round on call – various single and multi-day custom programs, pro-d day camps, school groups, etc.

We operate outdoor education programming on Vancouver Island with most programs running in Victoria and the surrounding areas. The majority of our programs consist of day camps and overnight camps for kids with the occasional school program, adult group, etc. While we do offer other exciting programs like expeditions, ski trips and more, all our staff spend a majority of their time (if not all of it) working children’s camps. Activities may include:

canoeing, kayaking, hiking, fire-building, knots, shelter-building, cooking, camping, forest games, swimming, archery, snowshoeing, geocaching, orienteering and more...

We are looking at adding mountain biking and rock climbing this summer.

We typically pays daily, which means you often work overnight and may be scheduled with  only 36 hours off per week. This is rare but can happen. 

We are working towards providing year-round, full-time employment for select individuals soon.  Staff with the most seniority will get considered for these positions first. It is ideal if you submit a criminal record check with vulnerable sector screening with your  application. If offered a contract, a criminal record check with vulnerable sector screening, must be submitted within 30 days of signing your contract. Copies of all certifications currently held must be submitted prior to receiving a contract offer.  Candidates missing certain certifications may still be considered if a written plan for obtaining the missing certifications is submitted as part of the application. Contracts with missing certifications are conditional.

Flexible and versatile and have above average time management skills  

Excellent at problem solving and detail oriented  

Strong leaders and may be able to supervise other instructors/guides  

Excellent at self care in all situations.  

Strong observational skills with regards to assessing group energy levels, weather, conditions,

etc.

 

Duties/Tasks

Working for us as an outdoor instructors requires that candidates are able to perform various duties and functions, some of which are listed below:

Directly supervise staff and give periodic, constructive feedback
Organize, supervise, and oversee programs & activities 
Mentor staff 
Communicate directly with parents and management 
Supervise people of all ages in various indoor, outdoor and wilderness settings, during the day and overnight. 

Teach clients about no-trace camping, nature, weather, etc. 
Transport and supervise children in company vehicles to and from various locations on Vancouver Island

Attend required training sessions 
Facilitate various outdoor activities such as forest games, kayaking, canoeing, swimming, archery, hiking, orienteering, geocaching, etc.

Facilitate unstructured exploration time in the wilderness 
Cook meals and/or assist participants with meal preparation 
Clean facilities, vehicles, etc. 
Handle office and admin tasks

Minimum qualifications:

4-years experience working with children, youth and adults 
Strong recreational background, experience and interest in the outdoors 
Clear criminal record check 
40 hr Wilderness First Aid 
Food safe certification 
Bronze Cross certification 
Class 4 unrestricted, class 2 or class 1 drivers’ license.

Desired qualifications:

Class 2 or 1 drivers’ license. 
80 Hour wilderness first aid 
PMBIA Mountain Biking Instructor Certification 
National Lifeguard certification 
Water Safety Instructor certification (WSI) 
Guiding or instructing certifications in canoeing, paddle boarding or kayaking 
ACMG Top rope climbing instructor certification or higher 
Experience working with children, youth and adults in outdoor/wilderness settings

Pay:

$150/day: base rate

+$10/day: 80 hr wilderness first aid

+$10 to +$25/day experience level

$220/day: maximum day rate for 2020
