Job Description

We are now recruiting instructors for our up and coming Spring/Summer season.

We are building our team of instructors to deliver exceptional outdoor education experiences from September 2021.  

One of 5 core departments our primary aim is to provide outdoor education for children & young people, while secondarily the camp provides programmes and services for family and adult groups – both community and corporate.  The camp itself is a large property 1.5 hours drive from Christchurch with accommodation for up to 200+ people over 3 different areas, providing catering services as well as outdoor programme instruction.   

Activities include Coasteering, Kayaking, High Ropes, Abseiling, Giant Swing, Archery, Raft Building, Flying Fox, Campfires to name a few.  

We want to find a diverse group of inspiring and energetic outdoor enthusiasts – from entry level ‘first time’ instructors with minimal experience to those with specific technical outdoor expertise and qualifications. 

The Position

Instructors are responsible for facilitating a range of educational programmes for school and community groups as well as school holiday programmes. 

Instructors will also host the groups that come in and must be able to work flexible hours. 

Accommodation is available onsitw and due to our location and the nature of the programmes, staff tend to live onsite at least Monday-Friday. 

We have varying positions based on experience and qualifications.

Tier 1 – Trainee  

Gain skills, experience and outdoor quals

Pre-requisites: Demonstrate a willingness to learn, to work well in a team, and to enjoy both the outdoors and the process of teaching children and young people   

Preferred: Current First Aid Certificate, Full drivers license and ability to drive a van / trailer

Remuneration: Onsite accommodation, meals and monetary allowance, in-house training and personal development, external outdoor qualifications   

 

Tier 2 - Instructor    

Log experience and develop your instructional skills   

Pre-requisites: As above plus NZOIA Leader award or similar, some formal training or demonstrated experience in a similar role (education or outdoors or both) - in a residential environment. Current First Aid Certificate, Full drivers license  

Remuneration: Full time fixed term salary, subsidised accommodation onsite, meals during holiday programmes, in-house training and personal development   


Tier 3 – Experienced Instructor    

Developing skills and leadership, solo instructor expectations on higher risk activities    

Pre-requisites: As above plus NZOIA quals or similar specifically Rock / Bush  / Kayak /Caving Diploma/Degree level outdoor ed/rec certificate 

Remuneration: Full time fixed term salary, subsidised accommodation onsite, meals during holiday programmes, in-house training and personal development   

All positions are for a fixed term contract from August 30 2021 to 27th May 2022.

Essential

  • Pro-active and adaptable  

  • Efficient time management and organisational skills  

  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to relate to people from different backgrounds  

  • Ability to work in a team environment  

  • Professional in attitude and behaviour 

  • Passion towards the outdoors and teaching people

  • Experience working with or volunteering with children and young people 

  • Current First Aid Certificate (Must provide)  

  • Clean police record  

  • Valid working visa valid until end 27th May 2022.

Desirable

  • Experience of education sector, particularly outdoor education, preferred    

  • Relevant outdoor qualifications  

  • Full clean driver’s license preferred (due to programming requirements)  

  • Experience in administration and hospitality
