Job Description

We are looking for an Instructor to join our team  

We are focused on providing high-quality Outdoor Learning to the school children of Edinburgh City along with a wide mix of other local authorities, youth, charity, corporate and Duke of Edinburgh related organisations. Our course delivery aspires to contribute to each school’s Curriculum for Excellence outcomes through Outdoor Learning. Potential candidates should be well practised and have a high level of competency in delivering residential outdoor learning that delivers C for E outcomes.

The Centre has a staff structure that incorporates a Centre Manager, Two Lead Instructors, Three Permanent Instructors, Two current fixed-term instructors and a pool of Casual Tertiary Instructional Staff. This vacancy is a new post to work alongside our three Permanent and two fixed term Contract Instructional Staff roles.  

Our salary range typically reflects the initial starting salary and annual increases until it reaches the top of the range.  For roles in grade 5 or above, annual increments in our contribution zones are dependent on achieving agreed performance goals.

This post is considered Regulated Work with Vulnerable Children and/or Protected Adults, under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. Preferred candidates will be required to join the PVG Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme update check prior to a formal offer of employment being made by the City of Edinburgh Council.

Qualifications:

Instructional staff are responsible for designing and writing their own programme. In order to do this, all Instructors are encouraged to obtain a wide variety of Outdoor Activity NGB awards. This allows them to write a diverse programme in a variety of seasonal weather conditions. Instructors in a more continuous contract such as this will also be required to take additional responsibility for individual activities such as Sailing or Skiing for example. A more advanced NGB award would be required for this purpose. we are looking for Instructors to have a least four of the following from the Standard Category and would look favourably on anyone with one from the Advanced Category:

Standard: 

  • Mountain Training: Summer ML, RCI  
  • BC: BC sheltered water coach (combined or single), UKCC Level 2 (Combined or single discipline), Four Star Leader Canoe or White Water  
  • MBLA: Trail Cycle Leader, British Cycling Level 2 
  • RYA: Dingy Instructor, Level 2 Powerboat 
  • General: Gorge walking experience, Caving experience, Cave leader level 1 or above   

Advanced:

  • Mountain Training: Winter ML, RCDI, MCI, WMCI
  • BC: UKCC level 3, Canoe or Kayak MW coach
  • MBLA: British Cycling Level 3, Mountain Bike Leader Award 
  •  RYA Senior Instructor, Safety Boat
