THE CITY OF MONROVIA
Located 20 miles northeast of Los Angeles and nestled at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains, Monrovia is home to nearly 40,000 active and engaged residents who enjoy a premier quality of life in a dynamic City that blends small-town charm with big-city amenities. THE CITY ORGANIZATION
Monrovia is a general-law city operating under the Council-Manager form of government. The five-member City Council appoints the City Manager who is responsible for the strategic direction and day-to-day operations of the City organization. The City Manager leads a full-time staff of 240 and a part-time staff of 100 employees while administering a Fiscal Year 2020-21 budget of $130 million.

Monrovia is a full-service municipality that coordinates its operations through seven departments: the City Manager’s Office, Administrative Services Department, Public Works Department, Community Services Department, Community Development Department, Police Department and Fire Department. Unique among California cities its size, Monrovia operates its own water system and library.

THE COMMUNITY SERVICES DEPARTMENT
The Community Services Department is responsible for Recreation and Library operations, programs and services. Recreation services are centralized at the Monrovia Community Center, just north of the Library and adjacent to the Historic and lively Old Town District. Recreation is responsible for a range of services including: special events, youth programs and sports, senior programs, passports, facility rentals, Canyon Park and the Hillside Wilderness Preserve.

The Community Services Department takes pride in setting high standards of excellence for their programs and community services for youth, adults, seniors, and families to promote healthy lifestyles and improve the quality of life. The department is dedicated to these initiatives within the community by providing positive recreation and leisure opportunities for people of all ages. This is achieved through encouraging citizen involvement and developing cultural harmony and is supported by the commitment to building and maintaining community partnerships and by responding to community needs.

THE POSITION
The City of Monrovia is looking for a special individual to serve as our Park Naturalist. The position will appeal to individuals who are inspired by the challenges and opportunities presented in working with an engaged and active community. The Park Naturalist will report to the Hillside Wilderness Preserve Supervisor.

Monrovia Canyon Park is a refreshing recreational site that provides a peaceful and quiet setting for family, friends, and social gatherings. Park Naturalists are often called the keepers of our nation's natural resources and protected public lands. The successful candidate will be a part of an integral team that educates the public, enforces rules and regulations, and supports conservation efforts, so future generations can continue to enjoy these natural resources.
Monrovia Canyon Park is the most used part of the Hillside Wilderness Preserve and is home to the Nature Center, cabin and many of the preserve’s trailheads. The Park Naturalist will assist with the daily operations of Canyon Park:

  • Provide customer service to patrons, colleagues, and volunteers
  • Build and maintain trails
  • Educate visitors and the community of the rules and regulations of the City and Park to ensure safety for all guests
  • Restore natural habitats and environmental stewardship
  • Instruct and lead educational and community tours for the local schools and residents of Monrovia
  • Maintain and oversee live animals, interpretive displays, and natural wildlife for the community to enjoy

 

Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge, abilities, and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the qualifications would be:

High School graduation and one (1) year experience in natural resources, park and/or grounds maintenance and/or animal care experience. College coursework in biology, natural sciences, forestry, environmental science, law enforcement or public administration highly desirable.

This position will be required to work some weekends, evenings, and holidays.

LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE
Possession of a valid Class C California Driver’s License and a good driving record. The ability to obtain PC 832 Certificate within one (1) year of appointment.

 

RETIREMENT
Hourly employees are enrolled in the Public Agency Retirement System (PARS) of the State of California. The City pays 3.75% and the employee pays 3.75% of contributions to equal 7.5%. The City does not participate in Social Security.

VACATION LEAVE
Hourly employees who work for 12 consecutive months in active status will be eligible to accrue 0.5 hours for every thirty (30) hours worked for a maximum of 24 hours.

SICK LEAVE
Hourly employees will accrue one (1) hour for every (30) hours worked for a maximum of 48 hours
