Job Description

SAILING MANAGER

We have an enviable location in Chichester Harbour - one of the UK's most beautiful places to sail. Our members include children taking their first steps in an Optimist to seasoned sailors who race every weekend in a wide range of dinghies, and everything in between. We are an accredited RYA training centre; a British Youth Sailing recognised club and, with our growing fleet of skiffs, sculls and SUPs, we also have an enthusiastic paddle sports following. And what we need now is someone with a huge love of sailing and water sports, endless enthusiasm, an eye for safety and an innate ability to get on with everyone you meet, to manage every aspect of our on the water offering.

This is a very prominent role in the club - you will be our ambassador, RYA Principal and the key contact for absolutely everything water related. From organising regattas, open meetings and flagship sailing events, to making sure the weekly racing programme has appropriate safety cover and race officers, it will be up to you to make everything run like clockwork. We need you to oversee and develop first class training that benefits all our members, from learning to sail to targeted fleet racing improvement programmes; from refresher courses to boat rigging sessions. Class captains will rely on you for all their fleet needs, and you'll develop a good working relationship with them. In short, you'll be dedicated to ensuring everyone has a safe and enjoyable time on the water and reaps the maximum benefit from the opportunities the club offers.

Ideally, you'll be a fully qualified dinghy instructor, and will definitely have experience of working in a similar role or possibly running a sailing or water sports school. It is really important that you are extremely organised and can prioritise your time and everything on your desk. Your IT skills will be top notch and you won't shy away from admin. One minute you'll be marketing and budgeting for training, recruiting the best instructors, ensuring all courses are fully booked and keeping up to date with RYA guidelines. And the next, you'll be organising duty rotas, allocating dinghy park space, sourcing new equipment or helping the Club House Manager arrange a sailing talk in the bar one evening. And if you spot any opportunities to improve how things are done, you'll have the club's full support. Friendly and approachable, the club team and all our members will find you very easy to work with. Especially important will be your working relationship with our Boatswain, as both roles are closely linked. Your manner will inspire confidence in everyone - from a nervous nine year old worried about the wind, to our most experienced members needing help with anything - and you'll also be very much at home chatting to members on the terrace after racing. You'll have a flexible attitude - being able to jump in a rib at short notice if an instructor doesn't turn up, or driving a safety boat for an event when extra cover is needed. You'll be also be thorough in everything you do, never cutting corners, and going out of your way to making peoples' experience of the club first rate, both on and off the water.

If you are interested in this role please contact us with your CV and a covering letter telling us why you would like to join our team.
