ESSENTIAL DUTIES
This position is responsible for the following job results.
  • Familiarize yourself with all equipment used in first aid area and be proficient in its use, maintenance and upkeep. (ECG monitor, Dynamap, Convective Warming Device, Heartstart AED, King Airway LTS-D, etc.)
  • Keeping triage room stocked with appropriate supplies and maintaining a daily inventory of these
  • Maintain familiarity with WVOEMS Paramedic Protocols and any changes/additions made to those protocols; abide by these
  • Critical Incident stress response for guests and other employees
  • Giving directions and maps to injured guests and family members to local hospitals or area
  • Assist local EMS agencies as mutual aid care
  • Assists with Quality Assurance and Training for the patrol incident
  • Assists patients with WV State Paramedic Protocols by following directions of online and offline state paramedic
  • Assists incoming patients by greeting patients, triaging patients (establishing order to be transported according to level of injury)
  • Communicate specific directions for assisting EMS agencies to patient transfer
  • Maintains quality of care to those with serious and/or life threatening
  • Using training received from NSP, OEC and EMS courses to provide basic/advanced life-saving first Notifying proper personnel for advanced life support and transfer of care timely and effectively.
  • Maintain current OEC certification through attendance of an annual ski patrol refresher and payment of
  • Arranges transportation (via ambulance or Patrol vehicles) for injured guests by contacting families, friends, and/or medical facilities and assisting with patrol
  • Drive injured parties to vehicles, condos or houses
  • Provide directions and maps to injured guests and family members to local hospitals or other appropriate medical
  • Maintain a safe work environment by following bio hazard precautions and assuring other staff is doing so as
  • Provide a guest service function at lift terminals by assisting lift attendants and mountain guides by checking tickets, and regulating riders to use the lift to its maximum efficiency
  • Assist with guest service problems
  • Contributes To Team Effort by assisting other departments to accomplish related results of the company's Vision For Success
  • Maintain patrol dispatch when assigned which involves receiving calls (via telephone and/or radio) and dispatching patrollers, equipment and adequate transportation to accident sites, and recording all incidents, both on paper, and in our computer database
  • Assist with emergency evacuation of ski lifts using NSM lift evacuation techniques and following area managements lift evacuation plan
  • Cleaning the patrol facility and vehicles, vacuuming, disinfecting vehicles, dining areas and patrol medical equipment as

Winter Patrol

  • Assist in Outdoor Emergency Care
  • Informing guests of the Skiers Responsibility Act Literature, through direct communication with guests
  • Enforce skier responsibility act and helps skiers by monitoring guests to make sure that they are following the Skier Responsibility codes
  • Inspect assigned slopes by skiing, riding, or snowmobile prior to morning slope
  • Prepare trails before opening to provide safe skiing conditions by marking hazards with signs, ropes and bamboo poles and checking to see that all hydrants lift towers and other man-made objects are marked with the appropriate skier awareness
  • Raising, digging out, repairing, replacing and adjusting, skier awareness devices
  • Provide continual operation check on skier transport systems by observing and reporting that all ramp conditions, stop gates, signs, are satisfactory and in the proper
  • Report any safety hazards, damage or excessive wear and tear on all aerial lifts and ground tows which involves having a general knowledge of the function of these machines, obtained through training and experience
  • Scanning the slopes throughout the shift looking for hazards obstacles and/or areas of concern that may not have been present at opening, remedy any such situation as it arises or alert the patrol manager/supervisor for potential slope/trail/feature
  • Provide efficient and complete closing of open trails by completing a daily sweep skiing, riding, or on a snowmobile at the end of the day, visually scanning the sides and woods for lost or injured guests, while moving ski patrol gear in such a manner not to impede grooming and snowmaking
  • Have a familiarity of the Weather Hold Policy, and the ability to interpret a weather radar loop for the potential of inclement
  • In the event of inclement weather, guests will be transported via company vehicles. The number of guests needing transport will be determined and communicated to the ski patrol manager/supervisor and dispatcher to arrange transports
  • Transport or arranging transport for guests at the end of the ski day back to their desired
  • Throughout the shift offer assistance, advice and/or directions to guests that appear to need assistance.
  • Document lift emergencies, weather hold, trail openings/closings, lost children, daily vehicle and snowmobile check
  • Build/repair and maintain slope fences, build/repair/dig out/adjust/replace skier awareness devices.
  • Handsaw/chainsaw and remove leaning or fallen trees and other woody debris that pose a potential hazard to users of ski
  • Maintains a professional standard of skiing and/or riding by skiing or riding at the National Ski Patrol System's basic

Summer Patrol

  • Enforces rider safety by requiring the proper personal protection through direct communication with guests and
  • Marking hazards with signs, flags, ropes and bamboo poles: Completing a weekly check of trails and features in the bike park areas of the western trail system and the basin trail
  • Reporting any trail or feature work needed to the Bike Park trails
  • Completing a daily sweep riding trails at the end of the day, visually scanning the bike trails for lost or injured guests. In the event of inclement weather, guests will be transported via company
  • General knowledge of the hiking, biking (downhill and cross country), and adventure departments trails system for access points in case of
  • Improving skills by taking lessons from the bike park
  • Riding at ones level of expertise. Riders should also be riding at the intermediate trail

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS

DIRECT EXPERIENCE

Education: High school degree or equivalent

  • Current WV certified EMT-Paramedic with ACLS/ PHTLS
  • During the candidate season work toward obtaining an Outdoor Emergency Care Hold a current Healthcare Provider CPR card.
  • Dues and Fees: Pay annual dues to the national ski patrol to maintain Outdoor
  • Emergency Care certificate. If applicable pay annual and semiannual fees associated with maintaining First Responder or EMT-P license. Pay annual fees for Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation refresher class.

Experience: 2 years

  • Will have to ride with manager or supervisor to evaluate skills (skiing and biking)
  • Patroller must be an intermediate to advanced downhill mountain biker and basic level skier or

Other Requirements:

  • Job Specific Background check
  • Maintain current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
  • Must complete the snowmobile and/or ATV (UTV) training course as well as be an approved driver on the company Driving Program before operating a company
  • Annual snowmobile and ATV (UTV) training refresher
  • To have and wear full face helmet, forearm pads, knee/shin pads, gloves, goggles, and riding
  • General maintenance knowledge for downhill
  • Have annual ski binding safety tests

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

Any employee or volunteer who operates a company vehicle including cars, trucks, snowcats, snowmobiles, or heavy equipment is required to comply with the Driver’s Standards Policy. This policy also applies to employees or volunteers driving their personal vehicles for company business more than four times per month, averaging 30+ miles per trip. All drivers should receive a full copy of the Alterra Driver’s Standards Policy; if you have not – please contact your Risk/Safety or HR/EE Department.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

This position may be required to work evenings, weekends and holidays.

Office Environment:

  • Able to lift, carry, or otherwise move and position a minimum of 20 pounds on an occasional basis.

Mountain Environment:

  • The primary physical environment in which this position works is out of doors with a high exposure level to cold, snow, wind, rain, bugs, sun, high altitude, extreme heights, lightning, etc...
  • The degree of strenuous activity within the job is considered to be high. Often lifting a weight of 50 pounds throughout the day is common.
  • Additional strenuous physical activity may include walking or hiking upon uneven, challenging terrain with heavy tools or equipment.
  • Exposure to: Chemicals required for cleaning, de-greasing, and painting Ultra Violet radiation from the sun enhanced through lack of atmospheric filtration at work altitude. Fumes produced in activities ranging from cleaning to painting to fabrication of metal products. Noise generated by snowmobiles, lift equipment, and tools may require hearing protection to be worn.
  • Talking and hearing occur continuously in the process of communicating with guests, supervisors and other employees.
