Description
The Ski Patroller 1 (P1) is an entry-level position. A P1 is expected to diligently devote his or her work hours to learning the fundamentals of ski patrol work, daily duties and participate in formal training sessions to achieve competency in all required tasks and skills.
Under the direction of the Shift Supervisor - Public Safety or designate, a Ski Patroller 1 provides first aid treatment to the public and staff, patrols and maintains all slopes and ski ways of the mountain in a safe manner and participates in all training programs as and when required. A Ski Patroller 1 maintains a cheerful and courteous relationship with the public at all times to ensure a safe and enjoyable skiing & riding environment. Being familiar with the Alpine Responsibility Code and basics of ski resort risk management are essential parts of the ski patroller’s work. Diligence and routine in the above skills reduce the risk factor and exposure of the ski area while striving to keep incident numbers to a minimal amount.
The following Experience / Requirements and Essential Functions are the minimum responsibilities of the Ski Patroller 1, other tasks and training needs may be assigned by the Shift Supervisor - Public Safety or designate. By the end of his/her first season the Ski Patroller 1 should be familiar, comfortable and efficient with all tasks listed below.

Experience/Requirements

  • Advanced Wilderness First Aid (80 hrs), or equivalent first aid training.
  • Valid CPR level C or HCP certificate.
  • Strong skiing ability in all types of snow on any terrain at the Village or similar operation; following the Ski Competency Assessment criteria.
  • Possess all required equipment (see list below) and maintains it in good working conditions.
  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in a cold winter environment.
  • Comfortable working at height or in exposed areas of a mountain environment.
  • Strong writing and communication skills.
  • Be able to work individually without supervision and as part of a team, exhibiting sound decision making and interpersonal skills with a high degree of professionalism.

Essential Functions

  • Obeys all Village Corporate Policy and enforces Mountain Operations Policies that are within the limits of their authority.
  • Acts as a “Mountain Safety Ambassador”.
  • Becomes familiar with the ski area, its operational boundary and nearby backcountry.
  • Provides prompt, efficient, and courteous delivery of first aid.
  • Maintains signage, equipment and monitors the conditions of slopes and ski ways.
  • Participates in education of the public and staff on safe skiing and riding at Village and other customer relations program.
  • Completes all required documentation in a timely fashion following emergency responses.
  • Develops a basic understanding of the Village Emergency Response Plan and all Emergency Response Assistance Plans. ERAPs include but are not limited to; Medical and/or Trauma, Avalanche rescue, Lift & Gondola evacuation, High Angle rescue, Search & Rescue and Security emergencies.
  • Understands his/her role in emergency response procedures.
  • Becomes proficient and prepared to participate in lift, gondola and self-evacuation procedures.
  • Participates in the avalanche control program in a capacity that reflects his/her individual training.
  • Documents all training, explosives use, avalanche control for legal purposes and as part of the Ski Patrol training checklist and continuing education program.
  • Develops an understanding of the requirements of Accident Investigations.
  • Operates a snowmobile and other oversnow vehicles within his/her abilities and training in accordance with the Village Training Guidelines and Policies.
