We offer the ultimate Kimberley coast experience, including the world-famous Horizontal Falls aboard their adventure day-tours departing from Broome, Western Australia. With a choice of three tour itineraries, guests experience pristine wilderness and natural phenomenon via return scenic flights and a guided 5-hour Kimberley day cruise.  

YOUR ROLE – SKIPPER 

Based on Cockatoo Island in the Buccaneer Archipelago, you will be an important part of a small team leading world-class adventure tours to the Horizontal Falls and Buccaneer Archipelago.

Reporting to the Island Operations Manager, you will be responsible for operating and maintaining all vessels, vehicles, and associated operational equipment, supervising and directing crew in a safe capacity whilst planning and providing an engaging and unique Kimberley tour experience for our guests.

ESSENTIAL SELECTION CRITERIA:

  1. Must be proficient in vessel operations - Must hold as a minimum a Master Class V Certificate of Competency (highly desirable)  or Unrestricted Coxswains Certificate of Competency (with a mandatory minimum of 2-3 years operational experience). A copy of your qualification needs to be provided in your application.
  2. Must have a minimum of 2-3 years of previous experience in a similar role, preferably in a marine tourism environment.
  3. Must have the ability to assess and act on environmental conditions very quickly and understand and respect the extremes of tidal movements experienced in the Kimberley.
  4. Understand the mechanical workings of all major machinery onboard a vessel including outboards and be able to methodically work through breakdowns towards a solution.
  5. Must have knowledge of the Kimberley coast, flora & fauna and historical information or the ability to assimilate this information quickly and provide interpretation to our guests.
  6. Must have the ability to anticipate guests needs, "read the play" and interact in a friendly, positive and professional manner whilst promoting the philosophies of the business.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Reporting to the Island Operations Manager you will be responsible for: 

  • The planning, execution and development of a high-quality Kimberley tour experience in a remote work environment.
  • The safe and efficient operation of the vessel (11m Custom Built Air Rider Fast Boat) and all associated equipment with an unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of our guests and crew always.
  • Development of a superior crew and a culture that emphasises quality, continuous improvement and high performance.
  • Supervising and directing crew to manage workloads, meet deadlines and problem solve.
  • Providing engaging interpretation to our guests on information pertaining to the Kimberley coast, flora, fauna and historical and cultural information.
  • Cleaning and maintenance of vessel and equipment before, during and after each tour. Including but not limited to toilets, rubbish disposal, deck cleaning, hull cleaning, stock take, house cleaning, cooking meals, cleaning vehicles.
  • Ensure vessel and equipment logs are correctly maintained and completed, complete vessel safety inspections on a regular basis.
  • Implementation of company policies and procedures.
  • Training of vessel personnel in company Environment, Health and Safety standards.
  • Relief Island Operations Manager duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

  • You must possess as a minimum a Master Class V Certificate of Competency (highly desirable) or an Unrestricted Coxswains Certificate of Competency (with 2-3 years proven operational experience) to apply for this position. A copy of your qualification must accompany your application.
  • Current WA Driver’s License – Manual License, Class Light Rigid with F Endorsement.
  • Senior First Aid.
  • Current National Police Certificate.
  • Current Responsible Service of Alcohol WA (RSA).

EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS:

  • You will be required to work a set roster of approximately 4 weeks on and 2 weeks off. This may vary from time to time depending on the tour schedule.
  • You will be required to base yourself in Broome and live and work on Cockatoo Island for your rostered time on.

REMUNERATION:  

  • Seasonal contract Mar - Nov.
  • Competitive day rate commensurate with experience.
  • Share accommodation and meals provided on Cockatoo Island for rostered time on.
  • Share accommodation provided in Broome for rostered time off. 

LOCATION:

  • Cockatoo island (FIFO from Broome),

START DATE / SEASONALITY: 

  • Start date 15 March 2021.  
  • Seasonal position - approx.Mar - Nov
