About the business

We employs  over 550 people throughout Queensland. We are an efficient and vibrant organisation servicing over 33,000 members. It was formally established in 1930 and is the governing body for surf lifesaving in Queensland, comprising of 57 affiliated surf lifesaving clubs in six regional branches. The organisation also includes supporters' clubs and a range of programs that involve more than 462,000 participants. We are directly affiliated with, and is part of Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA) and the International Life Saving Federation (ILF).

Our Organisation encompasses several diverse arms – lifesaving services, community education, membership services, surf sports, fundraising, aviation, lifeguards and commercial training.

About the role

We are seeking a passionate individual who holds experience with constructing and enhancing sporting programs, in addition to understanding the complexities of a membership organisation and the key areas to leverage in order enhance the membership base and offering.

This role will champion the value of surf sports and members both within and the broader community to lead a program that will identify and grow new opportunities for members and surf sports.

This position is suited to an individual with an innovative and visionary approach, who possesses the energy and enthusiasm to transform our sporting and membership programs.  You will be a strategic leader and a change agent with the ability to transform a strong vision for the participation, membership and athletic sectors to business strategy, leadership and commercial outcomes. Additionally, the General Manager, Membership & Sport will be required to work strategically and operationally, while holding the organisation's ethos at the core of all activities.  This role will work across the following areas:

  • Growth, development and retention of members
  • New market development for sport, competitions and learning pathways
  • Strategic partnership development
  • Member education
  • Training and development
  • Member support (which includes welfare & safety)
  • Sporting events and sports development.

Additionally, the General Manager, Membership & Sport will lead a cross functional team who hold a variety of skills and experience.  As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, the incumbent must have the ability to build and nurture relationships and to lead and support the change agenda of the organisation.

 

You will possess the following skills and knowledge

  • Commercial acumen to develop and implement a contemporary operating model for sport and membership, including delivery practices
  • Experience in leading a business transformation program with an organisation that has undertaken a significant, multi-year change program
  • Ability to establish innovation programs of work to optimise and accelerate delivery of the strategy
  • Strategic planning and resource management skills
  • Understanding of the complexities of working within a membership-based organisation with volunteers
  • Demonstrated capability to develop and deliver to an operational/business plan
  • Demonstrable experience in managing, controlling and administering budgets and allocated financial resources
  • Proven ability to lead and coach staff to achieve optimal performance
  • Exceptional relationship management skills, in particular establishing and fostering strong connections, consultation and engagement and negotiation
  • Strong presentation skills including public speaking and public relations
  • Strong organisational and administrative skills with a proven ability to determine priorities, make sound judgment, manage competing demands and meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to deal with a range of situations unique to change management in volunteer organisations including people management, community liaison, conflict resolution, diplomacy and problem solving
  • Sound knowledge of Surf Life Saving and Surf Sport (or like experience)
  • Demonstrated computer literacy (intermediate MS Office)

 

Qualifications and experience

  • 10+ years' experience in a similar field or role
  • Proven experience as a senior leader at executive level
  • Demonstrated experience in driving transformational change
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications (or equivalent professional experience)
  • The ability to obtain a Working with Children Blue Card (essential)
  • Valid Drivers' License
