An exciting opportunity has arisen, based across four sites in the city of Southampton. We offer Royal Yachting Association (RYA) and Canoe England courses to students, staff, and the general public throughout the year, as well as a number of recreational opportunities.

We host our University sports clubs on site, providing equipment and facilities for them to run their own activities, as well as providing support as required. We have a strategy that aims to get as many people active and onto the water as possible through both the provision of courses and water-based sessions. During the summer months, we look to run courses for children in the local community and utilise our amazing facilities for the benefit of the wider community.

  • The Watersports Centre is the hub of activity, located close to the main campus and halls which allows students easy access to the rowing, rifle, canoe and basic sailing facilities on offer. We have a number of dinghies, powerboats, canoes, SUPS, and rowing equipment on this site.
  • The Sailing club is a key satellite site where we offer more advanced sailing courses, recreational sailing, RS200 training and our Windsurf provision. We have a large number of dinghies on this site ranging from RS Quba’s through to an old rig 49er plus Windsurf kit ranging from wide boards to foiling.
  • The National Oceanography Centre is where we facilitate our advanced powerboat courses from. We also support our academic colleagues with training and research support. We have two coded 6.5m ribs on this site that live on versa docks.
  • Town Quay Marina is the location where we keep Flying Formula our Sigma 38 yacht. She is coded for 10 people as well as an RYA training boat for courses.

We are looking for someone who has a real passion for watersports who is driven to share their love of the water and get people active. The post holder will need to have experience working as a senior instructor, leading others, and can display good course management skills. The role will require supervisory skills that can develop others both on and off water as you look to grow a dynamic team of casual instructors to deliver the on-water schedule. Throughout the year the post holder may be asked to organise and host events for student clubs, which showcase our facilities and student talent. We are excited to work with someone who has vision for participation and enabling on water activity.

Key aspects of the role would be:

  • Deliver teaching, staff observations and water-based tuition throughout the year.
  • Create and deliver an annual year plan and schedule of courses that make the most of our facilities and equipment.
  • Have strong IT skills to use our membership system as well as core skills in Microsoft packages such as SharePoint and standard Apps.
  • Uphold a robust culture of health and safety, including but not limited to the creation of risk management documents, staff observations and incident reporting.
  • Line manage a number of staff on casual contracts.
  • Work closely with our customer service team to maintain and update our website and customer relation management system.

The position is full time and the successful candidate would be expected to work a number of weekends when courses are scheduled. (Currently every other weekend). This would include some late working for any events planned. This is reflected though the addition of the shift allowance at 10%.

As the post requires the applicant to work with children; we would undertake a DBS for this role.

As well as core benefits including a large employer pension contribution, maternity, paternity, and adoption leave and sickness benefits, other benefits include access to arts and culture facilities, childcare vouchers, a range of staff discounts, and flexible working policies.
