Hike / Trek / Mountain Leader Australia : HOW TO GET STARTED

To become a Mountain Leader in Australia, here are a few ways to get started...

1. Gain experience: You will need to have experience in a range of mountain environments, including summer and winter conditions. This experience should include navigation, emergency procedures, and group management. You can gain experience by undertaking personal trips and expeditions, and by participating in organized activities such as bushwalking clubs or outdoor education courses.

2. Obtain first aid certification: Mountain Leaders are required to have current certification in wilderness first aid, which includes training in remote area first aid, trauma management, and evacuation procedures. Courses are available from organizations such as St John Ambulance or the Red Cross.

3. Complete a Mountain Leader training course: There are several organizations in Australia that offer Mountain Leader training courses, such as the Australian School of Mountaineering and the National Outdoor Leadership School. These courses provide instruction in leadership, technical skills, and risk management.

4. Gain practical experience: After completing a Mountain Leader training course, you will need to gain practical experience by leading groups on expeditions in a range of mountain environments. This experience can be gained through volunteer work or by working for an outdoor education or adventure company.

5. Complete an assessment: Once you have gained sufficient experience, you can apply to undertake a Mountain Leader assessment. This assessment will test your leadership, technical skills, and decision-making abilities in a range of mountain environments.

6. Register with the appropriate governing body: After successfully completing your assessment, you can register with the appropriate governing body. In Australia, this is usually the Outdoor Council of Australia or the Australian Climbing Instructors Association.

We acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land. We pay our respects to their Elders, past and present, and the Aboriginal Elders of other communities who may be there today

By following these steps, you can become a qualified Mountain Leader in Australia. It is important to note that the requirements may vary slightly depending on the organization you choose to train and register with, so it is recommended that you research each organization's specific requirements before beginning the process.
