Hike / Trek / Mountain Leader : HOW TO GET STARTED

If you want to take groups out for easy hiking you can follow the path of Outdoor Education. When you start climbing Mountains there is a special level of stamina skill qualifications to learn.

 

First Aid (Wilderness and Rescue) and Mountain Leader awards will be essential. A particular job is likely to require the right qualifications for the local area. For example, a job as an expedition guide in the UK may require a Moorland/ Lowland Leader Certificate and a Winter Mountain Leader Award if conditions are icy.

 

An International Mountain Leader Award will provide expedition and navigation skills to lead groups of walkers in mountainous or remote areas of the world. If you get into the more hard- core mountain climbing, you will need to

 

If you have set your sights on the highest peaks consider these as likely requirements:

  • Mountain Instructor Certificate
  • Be Member of the Mountain Associations both locally and around the world. Check out more information on our pages about the sport in different regions. Click a region on the left. 
  • You will likely need classroom education such as Biology, Geology, Sports Science, Outdoor Recreation or the like
  • Advanced first aid training such as Rescue 3 Swift Water Rescue, and/or medical training such as a Wilderness Responder (WEMSI)
  • International Mountain Leader Award
  • Summer and/or Winter Mountain Leader Award
  • Other skills such as Ice Climbing, Sea Kayak leader depending on your region
