Job Description
Dates: Start date April 1 20
Wage: $152/per day ($19/hour) Full time year round. 30hrs/week
Location: Gambier Island, which is a 25 minute private boat trip from Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver
Accommodation provided. April – August in a shared room in a small unheated cabin without plumbing, electricity, or internet. September – March in a heated shared room with all utilities. Food is included when guests are on site. Compliance with all federal and provincial health orders related to COVID-19 will be ensured, including the ability to remain 2m apart in shared accommodations.
Duties and Responsibilities
Lead staff training sessions for activities including archery, canoe, kayak, farming, arts and crafts, sports, hiking, and nature based education
Plan recreational and sports activities for campers and adult guests
Supervise a small team of 2-3 season staff
Assist Managers with logistics by creating staff schedules, merchandise orders, and ensuring the maintenance of all recreational equipment.
Instruct groups and individuals in arts, crafts and similar activities and lead groups and individuals in recreational programs including archery, canoe, kayak, sports, hiking, and nature based education
Monitor recreational activities to ensure safety and provide first aid assistance when required
Assist with co-ordination of special events
Assist with additional marketing to increase group bookings particularly in the fall and winter
In cooperation with other program staff, assist with regular cleaning and daily operations of the Camp Fircom site as required
Other duties as required
Required Certifications and Experience
Post-secondary degree in a relevant field and/or minimum two year experience as a supervisor or resource staff in an overnight camp
1 year of experience in leading the following activities: archery, canoe, kayak, arts and crafts, and farm based programming
Willing to live full time on a remote site (Gambier Island) and able to work weekends and most major holidays
Clear Criminal Record Check
First Aid & CPR, (Wilderness First Aid preferred)
Proven leadership ability to guide and motivate campers, staff, and volunteers.
Strong organizational and interpersonal skills and ability to work under pressure, set priorities and meet deadlines particularly when organizing multiple programs at once
Experience in public speaking and demonstrated ability to capture the attention of large groups
Flexible and able to solve problems quickly and efficiently
Skills Considered an Asset
Bronze Cross, OFA II
Provincial certification in canoe or kayak
Experience leading a staff team
Demonstrated experience leading farm based education programs, particularly on a small scale vegetable farm.
Fluency in a second language
