Crewmembers will assist the crew lead (biologist) in collecting field data for several wildlife habitat/ silvicultural studies.
These adaptive management studies consist of experimental silvicultural treatments to restore wildlife habitat and improve wood production in even-aged young-growth forest stands.
The study sites are located throughout southeast Alaska on the Tongass National Forest. Crewmembers will work on a crew of 6 collecting vegetation and site data in the field. This will include measurements of site conditions including overstory tree characteristics, vascular plant cover, and plant biomass.
All team members will ensure the quality, e?ciency, and safety of the work done by the crew. This work is physically demanding due to long days, steep terrain, off-trail travel through dense vegetation, cold, wet weather, and the remoteness of sites.
Start date is NOT ?exible due to mandatory training schedule. You will first report to Juneau, AK, for two weeks of initial training. After training, members will travel and work in several areas of southeast Alaska.
Compensation amounts:
The research sites are scattered across southeast Alaska. Some can be reached by road, others require travel by foot, boat, ATV, or ?oat plane. Camping on site may be required for up to 8 days at a time.
Interns will receive training in wilderness first aid, CPR, aircraft and boat safety, ATV use, shoreline survival, defensive driving, bear behavior, pepper spray use, and radio use. Additional training is provided on the use of field research equipment.
Interns will be able to interact with scientists and professionals at the Juneau Forestry Sciences Lab. Outdoor recreational opportunities are abundant and include hiking, camping, fishing, biking, kayaking/canoeing, wildlife viewing

In Juneau, we have several apartment-style bunkhouse accommodations. Each apartment has two shared bedrooms with two beds each, two bathrooms, kitchen, and living room. The apartments are fairly new and fully furnished, including towels, bedding and cookware. The bunkhouse is adjacent to a paved bike trail and the city bus route. Bicycles are available for use. All utilities, including cable TV, are provided and there is a laundry room on site. The Hollis bunkhouse is fully furnished, including towels, bedding, and cookware) and has six bedrooms with two beds each, a large communal living and dining area, two communal bathrooms, a double kitchen, pantry, laundry, and gear room. Bicycles are available for use. All utilities are provided. There is no TV available, but a DSL internet connection with WiFi is available.
