We are a world class tourist attraction that provides visitors with the opportunity to learn about and see 16,000 incredible fish and aquatic organisms within 71 live exhibits showcasing the region's two world Heritage listed environments; the Wet Tropics Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef. 

The Position

A casual position is available for a PADI Dive Instructor with experience in conducting the PADI Discover Scuba Diving program. In addition to conducting discover scuba diving in our feature Oceanarium tank, the successful candidate will also be required to carry out general diving duties (cleaning and feeding dives) and assist our aquarist team with general animal husbandry duties as required. Qualifications, experience or interest in Marine biology is highly desirable. This role requires physical fitness and the ability to work in small confined spaces in tanks, lift heavy objects, walk and stand for long periods of time. Repetitive movements also include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and reaching. 

The Successful Candidate 

The successful candidate will be involved in a team which ensures the maintenance of the Aquarium is always operational and looking it’s best. You will be energetic with a positive focus, and have a genuine love and knowledge of marine and terrestrial environments. 

Essential Criteria

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in Diving, or working at public aquariums in the marine curatorial team.
  • Display a positive, proactive attitude and willingly invest extra effort when required
  • Professional appearance and excellent personal hygiene
  • Proven ability to work as an individual and as part of a team and contribute to the exchange of ideas and information on a regular basis
  • Must be able to work in an industrial work environment including confined spaces, areas with low headroom and difficult access
  • Strong troubleshooting skills
  • Must be able to work varying shifts, weekends, evenings, and holidays
  • Must be proficient with Word and Excel and be able to adapt well to various other computer programs for report writing requirements
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication, and organisation skills
  • Must be able to work well under stress dealing with live animals
  • Senior First Aid and CPR

   Desirable

  • Marine Science qualifications would be a considerable advantage
  • Practical lab experience operating water quality equipment
  • Dive qualifications (Dive Master or above)
