Position : Windsurfing Instructor
Duration: Present-September 2020 (seasonal), Casual/ Part-Time/ Full-Time (flexible)
Salary : hourly, negotiable

We have been operating at the Jericho Sailing Centre located in scenic Vancouver, BC, Canada since 1977. For over 38 years we have been teaching windsurfing, stand up paddling and skimboarding to individuals and groups. With our specialized equipment, friendly, experienced and professional staff, we offer the safest and most enjoyable way to get on the water and learn new skills. We have programs for large and small groups, schools, community centers, businesses and individuals, designed to give you a taste, or become proficient. Position Summary

We are looking for a windsurfing instructor to join our energetic and outdoor-loving team! While a candidate will ideally be proficient in the sport of windsurfing, there is also opportunity for training if knowledge or experience gaps exist. Additionally, we are very open to accepting out of country explorers to our team. In fact, many of our windsurfing instructors in past years have been visitors to Canada!

Responsibilities

  • Prepare class lesson plan (could be a group lesson, private, or semi-private).
  • Prepare equipment needed for the lesson equipment taking into account student ability, age, weight and height.
  • Facilitate instructor and student introductions
  • Introduce class goals, expectations and what to expect.
  • Introduce basic wind geometry.
  • Demonstrate concepts interactively by using dryland simulator (basic mechanics of propulsion/direction & steering).
  • Oversee wetsuit and life jacket fittings with help of beach hut attendants.
  • Lead selection, retrieval and assembly of equipment (board and sail).
  • Revise safety component of the lesson including: self rescue demo, boundaries and other hazards such as tide, current, and weather predictions.
  • Help students launch equipment on water.
  • Teach on the water including using demonstrations when appropriate. The instructor is on the water at all times with the students using a paddle board.
  • Help student clean and put away the equipment at the end of the lesson.
  • Debrief students on points of learning, including areas to concentrate on for future development.
  • Inform students about further lesson/rental and season's pass options open to them after the lesson.

Requirements

  • Knowledge and appreciation of windsurfing, including equipment and rigging
  • Group teaching experience
  • Good communication skills
  • Teamwork skills
  • Valid Pleasure Craft Operating Card or willingness to obtain one
  • Valid First Aid or willingness to obtain training
