Outdoor Education / Camp

Outdoor Education / Camp

The term 'outdoor education' is used broadly to refer to a range of organized activities that take place in a variety of ways in predominantly outdoor environments. Anything from camps to day hikes to kids mini-beast adventures. This field can also be a perfect place to if you want to begin a career trajectory towards a director of a program or camp, or even (GASP!) back indoors to teaching in schools or museums.

POTENTIAL EARNINGS

Here is where you can really Go Wild! A director of an outdoor education can push into the 6 figures, with an average salary more like between USD$50 -70k. The starting salaries in Outdoor Ed fall much lower around USD $20k. Often companies and programs include accommodation, training and a lot of upward mobility. Some outfitters run camps that may have you away for extended periods of time, and the pay will be commensurate. The pay scale here will really reflect your education level. If you want to get up to the Director level, you will need to have at least a BA and either a lot of experience or Masters Level Education. The type of work is also broad.

Expect to start low (around USD$10) but with good upward trajectory.
